About this event

Next month our Senate will vote on laws that would greenlight a massive radioactive waste storage facility in Kimba, South Australia.

The waste is already stored in the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation’s purpose-built Lucas Heights facility. Transporting and double-handling the waste only risks our communities’ health.

On this webinar, you will hear from Barngarla Traditional Owners, Kimba farmers, SA Labor and me on what it will take to keep our communities safe ahead of this critical vote.

Check out the speakers you will hear from:

  • Jason Bilney, Chair of the Barngarla Determination Aboriginal Corporation (BDAC): The Barngarla people are the Native Title holders of the Kimba region and have consistently opposed the federal waste plan.
  • Peter Woolford: Peter is a farmer and grain producer who played a leading role in the local community campaign against the waste facility from day dot.
  • Dave Sweeney, ACF Nuclear Free campaigner: I’ll discuss why the Kimba plan is flawed and options to better advance responsible radioactive waste management in Australia.
  • Karina Lester, Yankunytjatjara Native Title Aboriginal Corporation: Karina is a powerful advocate with deep experience of the lived impacts of the nuclear industry.
  • Deputy Labor SA Leader Susan Close: Susan is the Member of Parliament for Port Adelaide and has previously worked in many environment organisations.
  • Craig Wilkins, Chief Executive of Conservation SA: Craig will be the moderator for this webinar.

This event is being hosted by our friends at the Conservation Council South Australia.
