About this event

A free film screening to celebrate the heroes of our Top End coasts.

This collection of short films showcases the diversity of our coastal communities. A devoted fisherwoman, tourism operator, Traditional Owners, Aboriginal Rangers, an i-Kiribati, a fishing guide, a pastoral land owner, a construction worker, and others, are all united by a love for our coasts.

We are honoured to bring these voices from across our Top End coast together into a one-night Film Festival here in Darwin. The stories are told from the heart and are lived experiences from this beautiful place we call home.

There is a common thread – our coasts are at the heart of our Top End lifestyle, but their health is under threat. Across the Territory communities are seeing signs of decline – mangrove dieback, pollution, depleted fish stocks. We are calling for action to protect our coasts this NT election.

We’ll hear from a panel of some of our champions profiled in the films as well as the filmmakers. Representatives from the political parties have been invited to address the audience about where they stand on protecting our coasts should they be elected to Government/Parliament.

Examples of the short film stars:

  • Rhett Walker of Lorella Springs Station
  • Sylvia Nulpinditj, Yolŋu leader, radio presenter, artist.
  • David McMahon, head tour guide Venture North and Cobourg Fishing Safaris
  • Jim Smith, owner-operator of Sea Darwin
  • Charlotte Klose, fisherwoman and fishing store worker.
  • Phil O’Brien, Territory legend, has worked in croc farming, pearling, and fishing.
  • Rosa Normand, an i-Kiribati with saltwater in her veins.
  • Filmmakers Phil O’Brien, Nicholas Parry and Caro McDonald.
