Next time you get in your car think about this: transport in Australia contributes around 100 million tonnes of greenhouse gasses into our atmosphere every year.
Cars make up more than half of our nation’s total transport emissions.
If everyone in Australia left their car at home for just one day, we would stop about 120,000 tonnes of Co2 going into the atmosphere.
Sounds good, right?
On 26 August, take up the challenge to leave your car at home and cycle, walk, scoot or skate instead.
Park it For the Planet Day aims to help reduce the carbon emissions caused by Australia’s transport sector.
And getting around without the car is probably easier than you think.
According to Bicycle Network Australia CEO, Craig Richards, more than half of the car trips we make are shorter than 5km.
So ditch the car and get on your bike, jump on your scooter, strap on your skates or walk to replace your short car journeys.
Park it For the Planet Day is run by Bicycle Network and you can register here to get involved in the event.
You can still take part if you don’t cycle; just upload a picture of you walking, scooting or skating onto social media with the hashtags #FightForPlanetA and #ParkitForThePlanet
There is no Planet B, so let’s all work together and Fight For Planet A!
