On 5th November, the most progressive voice in the WA Parliament, The Greens, will be hosting a rally at Parliament House, in support of the first piece of legislation to be debated in the WA Parliament that establishes hard targets to get WA to zero emissions by 2040.
Scientific opinion is that if the whole world achieves zero carbon by 2040, we still only have a 50/50 chance of avoiding +1.5C warming. More recent modelling suggests that even that may now be impossible. To avoid catastrophe, we don’t have time to set distant targets. A +1.5C world is not safe, not secure.
Extinction Rebellion will be at the rally to support any action on the climate crisis as a step in the right direction. This is an emergency. Join the rally by bringing along placards and banners to communicate the following messages:
1 – THE WORLD IS ON FIRE – Right now, fires are raging across South America and in other parts of the world. We all remember the Australian bushfires over summer. This is a climate emergency. Bring fire-themed placards, or dress in fire-themed costumes.
2 – ACT NOW – NET ZERO BY 2025 – Instead of long-term targets, we need immediate action to avoid worst-case scenarios.
3 – POLITICS IS BROKEN – The most progressive, climate-aware party in WA politics is handing the government a business-as-usual target of net zero by 2040, on a platter.
